College of Arts and Sciences faculty members Benjamin Anderson and Saida HodžIć have been awarded the Robert and Helen Appel Fellowship for Humanists and Social Scientists, and Vivian Zayas and Edward Swartz have been awarded the Robert A. and Donna B. Paul Academic Advising Award in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The New York-based quartet will receive $100,000, concert engagements, artist representation and a recording deal.

Numerous artists have been launched into chart-topping, award-winning careers by Mathew Knowles, including both his daughters, Beyoncé and Solange. On Thursday, Sept. 27, Knowles will discuss his first two books, “The DNA of Achievers” and “Racism From the Eyes of a Child,” in a panel at 4:30 p.m. in the Africana Studies and Research Center. A reception will follow. The event is free, and the public is invited.

<p>The 2018 Cornell Council for the Arts (CCA) Biennial launched with a tour of outdoor projects on campus Sept. 28 and artist panels at a conference Sept. 29. The Biennial features Cornell and invited artists, such as Carrie Mae Weems and Xu Bing, with 18 project installations and performances on the theme “Duration: Passage, Persistence, Survival,” curated by CCA director <a href="https://english.cornell.edu/timothy-murray">Timothy Murray</a>.</p>
The Cornell University Glee Club, the university’s oldest, continuously operating student organization, will celebrate its sesquicentennial with a free concert. The group will sing pieces from different eras Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in Sage Chapel. The event is open to the public.
Two students who specialize in jazz have received recent honors for their blend of passion, performance and academics.
Students in the new class, Instrumentation for Composers, wrote for eight solo instruments and had their pieces performed by professional musicians on the Cornell faculty.

<p><a href="https://music.cornell.edu/andrew-hicks">Andrew Hicks</a>, associate professor of music and medieval studies, has been recognized with two awards for his recent book, “Composing the World: Harmony in the Medieval Platonic Cosmos,” published by Oxford University Press.</p>

The album, “Blueprinting,” features recordings of new works written for the quartet by five contemporary American composers.
<p>Aditya Deshpande ’22 performed Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major to win the 16th Cornell Concerto Competition, held Dec. 9 in Barnes Hall. He will perform the concerto with the Cornell Symphony Orchestra at a concert on campus in March.</p>

<p>Doctoral student <a href="https://music.cornell.edu/shin-hwang">Shin Hwang</a> was selected as one of five finalists in the Sfzp International Fortepiano competition by the American Classical Orchestra.</p><p dir="ltr">The top two prize winners will be selected after a final round of performances March 9 in New York City.</p>
