Assistant Professor Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri recently had a new composition titled Generator /Operator premiered by Klangforum Wien at the ECLAT Festival in Stuttgart, Germany on February 8.
Papalexandri was asked to collaborate with Swiss animation artist Andrea Schneider to create a multidisciplinary work and addresses topics such as cooperation, trust, sharing, and solidarity. Generator/Operator is written for three generators (viola, clarinet, and oboe players) and seven operators (bassoon, bass flute, percussion, and four string players). Papalexandri designed motor-driven sound objects, and collaborated with her partner, Swiss kinetic artist Pe Lang, to create a set of hand crank generators which convert mechanical motion into electrical energy, and directly drive and synchronize the motorized devices. The set allows a generator to activate several motor-instrumental devices, combined with acoustic instruments such as strings, percussion, and winds, to produce sound. Generator/Operator reflects Papalexandri's fascination of the forces of nature and the phenomena of physics– such as friction and electricity– as well as her interest in physical "labor" and the sound that results from it.
Generator /Operator is part of the Common Good Economy (Christian Felber) and Happiness Machine project of Klangforum Wien, Musik der Jahrhunderte and Amour Fou Vienna in cooperation with Tricky Women, with special funding from the Kulturstiftung des Bundes and Interfaces/Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. Generator/Operator was commissioned by Klangforum Wien, the ECLAT 2019 - Festival Neue Musik Stuttgart and was written for Klangforum Wien, who performed the premiere.
