The 2022 Sanjek Student Paper Prize from the International Association for the Study of Popular Music-US Branch (IASPM-US) has been awarded to graduate student Cibele Moura. The award is given each year to the student who has written and delivered the most outstanding paper at the IASPM-US annual conference.
Moura's paper "'O Proibidão do Bolsonaro:' The New Right’s Cannibalization of Transgression" impressed the prize committee, who noted that "[her] research on Brazilian politics and the New Right’s surprising adoption of a popular song deftly mixes theory and cultural critique. [It] encourages us to hear familiar music in a new light – broadening our understanding of popular music’s meanings."
