"Novitiate," a 2017 film featuring a score by Christopher Stark (D.M.A. Composition, '13), will be released in theatres on October 27 by Sony Pictures Classics. Stark composed the score while at Avaloch Farm, an artist colony in New Hampshire. With his work space confined to the small desk in his bedroom, Stark described the incredibly intensive process in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
"The process happens remarkably fast. I had a little desk that was maybe 2 feet by 3 feet and my laptop, and I had about a week to compose the music.”
Currently an Assistant Professor of Composition at Washington University in St. Louis, Stark has received numerous honors since earning his D.M.A. from Cornell. These include a 2017 fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, a 2016 residency at Copland House, and premieres at the Whitney Museum of American Art as part of the 2016 NY Phil Biennial. His music has been performed by such ensembles as Alarm Will Sound, American Composers Orchestra, Arctic Philharmonic, Los Angeles Piano Quartet, and the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble.
