Senior Lecturer Christopher J. Miller has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award for spring 2025, when he will travel to Indonesia and teach two courses at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. According to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State, Fulbright Scholar Awards "are prestigious and competitive fellowships that provide unique opportunities for scholars to teach and conduct research abroad. Fulbright scholars also play a critical role in U.S. public diplomacy, establishing long-term relationships between people and nations.”
In the Department of Music, Miller has an impressive record of inviting and hosting major Indonesian artists to perform and work with students. In Yogyakarta, he will facilitate scholarly exchange by sharing English-language scholarship with undergraduates who lack the language skills to engage with this research, and he will also teach a graduate seminar with more advanced students on topics that go beyond the customary focus on the gamelan.
