Three Musicology PhD candidates have been awarded pre-doctoral fellowships for 2018–19. Carlos Ramirez has received the Diversity Scholars Fellowship at Ithaca College. Ramirez writes, “I will design two new courses for the School of Music. In the fall I plan to teach an undergraduate course on Global Reggaeton; the spring course is still being worked out, but as of now it will be a graduate seminar on the topic of Music, Authority, and Agency.” Ramirez will also set himself to finishing his dissertation, “Keyboarding Song: Luis Venegas de Henestrosa’s Libro de Cifra Nueva (1557) and the Mediation of Sound in Early Modern Spain.” Meanwhile, Mackenzie Pierce reports, “I will be a Visiting Fellow at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. from September through April. I also received a research fellowship at the Polin Museum for the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw from May through July. As part of both fellowships, I will be conducting research in the museums’ archival holdings and revising my dissertation, ‘Life and Death for Music: A Polish Generation’s Journey across War and Reconstruction, 1926–53.’” Finally, Dietmar Friesenegger has been awarded a Mario Einaudi Fellowship for Dissertation Research from the Cornell Institute for European Studies, to complete work on his dissertation, entitled “Voices Between Cultures in the Eastern European Borderlands: Music in Czernowitz, 1862–1918.” He will conduct research in Ukraine, Romania, Austria, the Czech Republic and the US. He writes, “The fellowship also enables me to be in Ukraine at the time of the second Mandyczewski Festival, for which I drafted the program. It will feature music by four composers who had worked in Czernowitz between 1862 and 1918, using scores that I located in archives in Chernivtsi/Czernowitz, Bucharest, Plzen, and Vienna.”
