Lee Kimura Tyson wins Sanjek Student Paper Prize

Graduate student Lee Kimura Tyson has won the 2021 Sanjek Student Paper Prize from the International Association for the Study of Popular Music-US Branch (IASPM-US); the title of their essay is “Trans Vocal Authenticity and SOPHIE’s Hyperreal Voices.” The award is given each year to the student who has written and delivered the most outstanding paper at the IASPM-US annual conference. In their announcement, the prize committee commented:

"The committee was particularly impressed with Tyson’s breadth of methodology and well-balanced pacing. The paper seamlessly weaves issues of genre and social context into a relevant contemporary pop narrative—all while engaging with the sonic nuances of the music in a straightforward, effective way."
