Emily Hurwitz, a senior double-majoring in music and psychology, recently published an article with Professor Carol Krumhansl entitled "Shifting Listening Niches: Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic," in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. As part of the Music Cognition Laboratory, they studied how the music listening habits of undergraduate students changed, as well as the functions of music, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hurwitz notes that the most interesting findings from the research show that "we do see a progression back to more normal, pre-pandemic social listening habits as students returned back to campus for the hybrid Fall 2020 semester. This suggests a desire to return to normalcy, and music can definitely help with that transition."
