How to submit recordings

Students should submit recordings only if they believe that their musical abilities will enhance their application. Recordings must isolate and highlight the applicant; group performances that obscure the ability to assess an individual’s level of talent will not receive evaluation. Please choose two or three contrasting selections or portions thereof (ones that show variety in style, character, etc.). The total length of the recording should not exceed 15 minutes. If you have multiple abilities, it is fine to submit multiple recordings, but each instrument should be on a separate CD or in a separate MP3 file, as these are evaluated by different people. It is to be understood that any recording submitted represents your own work; please consult Cornell’s Code of Academic Integrity for definitions of what constitutes plagiarism. MP3 file submissions are encouraged.

Composers should send one or two scores that are representative of their recent work, and, whenever possible, a recording of the work(s) submitted.

Submissions, whether on CD or as an MP3 file, must be clearly labeled with all of the following information:

  • Full name and e-mail address
  • Date of birth
  • Instrument/voice part
  • A list of the selections (with titles and composers) and assisting performers (if applicable)
  • College of application (e.g. Arts and Sciences)
  • Indicate one: Early Decision, Regular Decision, or Transfer Admission

Please send recordings directly to:

Recordings sent to the Undergraduate Admissions Office or to any of the individual colleges will not be considered.

Please note that materials will not be returned, and recordings will not be considered if postmarked later than November 1 for early decision or January 1 for regular decision.
