Sierra's Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra programmed by BSO

Fri, 03/23/2018

The Boston Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Thomas Wilkins, will perform Roberto Sierra's Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra in their 2018–19 season. Scheduled for March 23, 2019, the jazz-inflected program also includes works by Adolphus Hailstork, Duke Ellington, and Florence Price.

Roberto Sierra, Old Dominion Foundation Professor in the Humanities, was commissioned to compose the concerto by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.  It was premiered in 2002, and featured James Carter — who performs the piece again in Boston next year.
