Peter Fahey



Peter Fahey is an Irish composer. His music has been performed by ensembles such as the American Composers Orchestra conducted by Robert Spano, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Continuum, Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, Ensemble Recherche, the iO Quartet, the Players Chamber Ensemble, the PM Ensemble, the Royal Northern College of Music Symphony Orchestra, and the Talea Ensemble; soloists have included Tony Arnold, Philip Higham, and Chi-Chen Wu. He has been awarded the American Composers Orchestra Underwood New Music Commission, the Stephen Kaske Fellowship at the Wellesley Composers Conference, the Robbins Family Prize in Composition from Cornell University, a Susan and Ford Schumann Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival and School, and the Franz Liszt Stipendium from the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar; he has received a number of awards from the Arts Council of Ireland, including a Commissions Award and a Professional Development and Training Award.

Before coming to Cornell, Peter studied composition with Eric Sweeney at the Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland and with David Horne at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England; he has also been an exchange scholar at Columbia University, New York, where he studied with Fabien Lévy. He has taken part in the Aspen Music Festival and School Master Class Program (directed by Christopher Rouse, with Matthias Pintscher), the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (individual studies and masterclasses with Misato Mochizuki, Isabel Mundry, and Wolfgang Rihm), the Irish Composition Summer School, the Tactus Young Composers’ Forum Belgium, the Voix nouvelles Composition Session at the Royaumont Foundation, France (directed by Brian Ferneyhough, with Johannes Schöllhorn, and Dmitri Kourliandski), the Weimarer Meisterkurse Kompositions-Workshop, and the Wellesley Composers Conference. He has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony, New Hampshire, a guest artist at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, New York, and a resident artist at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig, Ireland.
