Performances of current and recent DMA composers' works | Fri Jul 10, 2009
Since February 2009, current D.M.A. composers and recent graduates have had significant public performances of their works, including Fang Man, Xi Wang, Eric Nathan, Jesse Jones, and Yotam Haber.
Fang Man
Fang Man's work, Resurrection, was performed on the American Composers Orchestra's new series, "Orchestra Underground," designed to challenge conventional notions about symphonic music. The pair of concerts (2/20/09 at Zankel Hall, at Carnegie Hall in NYC, and 2/22/09 at the Ibrahim Theater, at the International House in Philadelphia) was led by conductor George Manahan. Featuring five world premieres, the concerts also included music by Margaret Brouwer & Kasumi, David Schiff, Rand Steiger, Kati Agócs.
Resurrection, a clarinet concerto for ACO's Music Alive
Composer-in-Residence Derek Bermel, juxtaposes Eastern and Western music traditions. The work is influenced
by Kandinsky's Composition V-Resurrection and is
the result of Mandy's winning ACO's 2006 annual Underwood Emerging
Composers Commission.
In addition, the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted Mandy's Deluge on April 7, 2009, at Walt Disney Hall as part of the orchestra's Green Umbrella Series. This was one of the final concerts led by Salonen as he concluded his tenure as Music Director of the LA Phil.
